Frequently Asked Questions

The basics

How can you really be selling digits of pi?

Pi's digits are infinite and freely known — we're not selling mathematics. What you're buying is a unique, permanent web page tied to a specific position in pi: your own personalized corner of the internet with a mathematical address. Think of it like buying a plot of land. The landscape (pi) belongs to everyone, but the plot (your page) is yours alone. You can decorate it, link to it, share it, and even sell it later.

What do I get when I buy a slice?

A permanent, customizable public page associated with your chosen digits. You can add a bio, links, and a profile photo. Your page appears in the pi grid on the home page, visible to all visitors, and people can leave comments on it. Your digits are reserved exclusively for you — nobody else can purchase them while you own them.

Is my purchase permanent?

Yes. Once you own a slice, it's yours to keep for as long as this site exists. Nobody can buy those digits out from under you — unless you choose to list them for resale.

Why do earlier digits cost more?

Prestige and position. The digits closest to the start of pi are the most recognizable and sought-after. The further along you go, the less distinctive the position — so original prices were set accordingly, with the earliest digits commanding the highest asking prices.

Reselling

Why is there a maximum amount I can sell my digits for?

To keep the grid navigable and prices meaningful. Without a cap, a single owner could list cheap digits at an absurd price, making it impossible for visitors to find affordable slices in any logical order. The cap keeps resale pricing grounded relative to the surrounding market, so the grid stays useful for buyers. If you don't like the maximum price you can sell your digits for, you can always wait: the maximum price might increase over time if other lower priced digits in the same area are purchased.

How is the maximum resale price determined?

Your cap is whichever is higher of two amounts:

  • Double what you paid — you can always at least double your investment.
  • Double the cheapest listed price for any digit that appears earlier in pi than the start of your listing — this anchors your price relative to the surrounding market.

If there are no digits listed for sale above yours, the cap is the site-wide maximum.

How do I receive payment once I resell my digits?

We pay sellers via PayPal.Me, so you'll need a PayPal account with a PayPal.Me link before you can list your digits for sale. When you create your listing, you'll be asked to provide your PayPal.Me link. Once a sale completes, you'll receive an email confirmation and we'll send your payment — minus a small platform fee — typically within 5 business days.

Why can I sell some digits for much higher than others?

Because your maximum is tied to what you paid, not a global average. If your slice spans digits from different original price tiers — say you bought a block where some digits were originally expensive and others were cheap — each digit's cap reflects its own purchase price. Digits you paid more for can be listed at a higher maximum.
