I have recently been learning about The Web Revival, which seems to be roughly defined depending upon who is describing it. My take is that it is about bringing back the "independent web", a time where social media was about websites were largely owned by individuals who were linking to each other. Contrast that to the social media platforms of today, dominated by big corporations like Meta, Google, X, Discord, etc... who sell our data for profit.
The below YouTube video is a great overview from "onionboots":When I saw this video, I was super excited to see that there is a community with similar concerns to me. I even started to think that this is whereBuy a Slice of Pi™ belongs as part of that revival. It was a nice thought while it lasted, but now I am not sure about it.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to be part of that movement, but I do feel that some of what this website offers is different than what many in the movement are expecting. Yes, I do allow people to own a slice of π and customise it the way they want to. But that customisation does not extend to CSS and running arbitrary JavaScript. Of course I could go that direction, but that would be a diversion from what I originally built this website for.
Ultimately, Buy a Slice of Pi™ is an experiment to see if a paying a small fee for digital ownership is a viable social media business model. There is limited supply by design. You own your page, you customise it and you can later sell it at a price you choose. The hope is that you enjoy the website as is, but also view it as an investment. It's similar to buying a home: you buy it because you like it and want to live there, but you also own it and may later be able to sell potentially at a profit. If this concept works, then maybe we can live in a world where social media is not all about tracking people and selling their data.
It is very clear to me that a lot of people in The Web Revival also have concerns about privacy. But I am not sure whether many would accept this website as part of their movement.
